Running an SEO business means you expect competition.
You expect other companies to improve their websites, build links, create better content, strengthen their local presence and fight for the same rankings.
That is normal.
What is far more frustrating is when suspicious links begin appearing from websites you have never heard of, using commercial anchor text you would never have chosen, pointing directly at pages you are trying to rank.
That is exactly what happened to PK SEO.
As a business competing for terms such as SEO Services Sydney, SEO services, Sydney SEO specialist, search engine optimisation and related commercial searches, PK SEO operates in one of the more competitive digital marketing markets in Australia.
When you consistently compete against agencies with larger teams, larger budgets and far more marketing resources, you are always going to upset someone when you outrank them.
Whether the spam links we uncovered were deliberately placed by a competitor cannot be proven.
But the timing, pattern and nature of the links were suspicious enough that they could not simply be ignored.
The First Sign Something Was Wrong
The issue did not begin with one obviously bad backlink.
It was a pattern.
A group of unfamiliar websites began linking into the PK SEO site.
Many had very similar layouts.
Several looked like low-quality publishing networks or automatically generated websites.
Others appeared to contain thin articles, strange categories, irrelevant content or pages that seemed to exist primarily to publish links.
The bigger problem was the anchor text.
These links were not using normal branded anchors such as:
- PK SEO
- Peter Karpouzas
- pkseo.com.au
- Sydney SEO business
Instead, some were using commercial keyword phrases pointing directly at important pages.
That is not how we normally build links.
A proper backlink strategy for SEO services in Sydney should contain variation.
You would expect branded links, topical links, natural citations, business-name mentions, URLs and carefully selected commercial anchors.
What you would not normally do is repeatedly send aggressive money-keyword anchors from questionable websites to a business homepage.
That immediately raised concerns.
The Timing Made It Even More Suspicious
Backlink analysis showed that several similar links appeared within a relatively short period.
More followed later.
At the same time, rankings that had previously been performing strongly became far more volatile.
That does not prove the links caused the ranking movement.
SEO professionals need to be careful about jumping to conclusions.
Google rankings move for many reasons.
Algorithm changes, competitor activity, localisation, device differences, indexing changes and normal SERP testing can all affect visibility.
But when unusual links appear in clusters and ranking instability follows, you investigate.
You do not simply shrug and hope everything is fine.
Why Spam Backlinks Are So Frustrating
The worst part about this kind of problem is the amount of time it steals from the business being targeted.
Instead of working on:
SEO services
content improvements
client campaigns
conversion optimisation
technical improvements
and generating new enquiries
you suddenly have to spend hours investigating backlinks you never asked for.
You have to identify where they came from.
You have to determine whether they are legitimate.
You have to check whether they belong to a client, supplier, publication or previous placement.
You have to compare dates.
You have to inspect anchor text.
You have to look for network footprints.
And then you have to decide whether each domain is dangerous enough to warrant action.
That is time a business owner should never have had to spend.
We Used Multiple Sources to Cross-Check the Links
One backlink report is never enough.
Different backlink databases discover different links at different times.
Some find links quickly.
Others take longer.
Some may show a domain that another platform has never crawled.
So we used several independent backlink and search-data sources to compare what was appearing.
The names of the services are not important.
What mattered was the process.
We looked at:
- recently discovered backlinks
- commercial anchor text
- domain relevance
- link placement
- site structure
- publishing patterns
- referring-domain quality
- discovery dates
- repeated layouts
- suspicious geographic domains
- duplicated site footprints
This allowed us to separate genuinely useful links from obvious rubbish.
That distinction matters.
You should never disavow links simply because a metric looks low.
A small local business website may have a low authority score and still be a completely legitimate backlink.
Likewise, a website displaying impressive-looking SEO metrics may be nothing more than a manufactured publishing network.
Context matters more than one number.
Some of the Websites Looked Almost Identical
This was one of the strongest warning signs.
Several domains used similar website structures.
The content patterns looked familiar.
The design and publishing style resembled other sites in the same group.
Some appeared to target commercial keywords across unrelated industries.
When multiple websites with similar characteristics begin linking to the same business around the same period, it deserves closer inspection.
This was not simply one random blog linking to PK SEO.
It looked organised.
Again, we cannot prove who placed the links.
But as a business competing against other Sydney SEO services providers, it is reasonable to consider competitive sabotage as one possible explanation.
That does not mean accusing another company without evidence.
It means recognising that negative SEO still exists as a tactic some people attempt to use.
Why Would Anybody Target an SEO Business?
Competition. SEO companies compete for some of the same customers and many of the same keywords. When a smaller independent business begins appearing above larger agencies, that can become commercially significant. Someone searching SEO services Sydney is not simply looking for information.
They may be looking for a provider. A single customer can be worth thousands of dollars over the life of a campaign. That means page-one visibility has genuine commercial value. At PK SEO, the focus has always been on competing through better targeting, stronger pages, relevant backlinks, local signals and commercial search intent.
If another business beats us legitimately, we improve. That is competition. Trying to manipulate another company’s backlink profile would be something entirely different.
Building the Disavow List
Once we had enough evidence that particular domains were not links we wanted associated with PK SEO, we began building a disavow file. A disavow file tells Google that there are certain backlinks you do not want considered as part of your site’s link profile. This is not something that should be done casually. Incorrectly disavowing legitimate backlinks can remove signals that may actually be helping a website.
That is why every suspicious domain was reviewed before being added. We classified domains according to their characteristics.
Examples included:
- obvious spam websites
- manufactured publishing networks
- automated link-list pages
- unrelated websites using aggressive commercial anchors
- suspicious duplicate-style domains
- websites with no legitimate reason to reference PK SEO
We also deliberately excluded legitimate domains where there was another explanation for the link. That is important. The objective was not to create the biggest disavow list possible. The objective was to create the most accurate one.
Why We Used Domain-Level Disavows
In many cases, the problem was not one individual page. It was the domain itself. Where a website appeared to be part of a spam network or existed largely for manufactured links, blocking one URL would not solve the underlying problem. A domain-level disavow was therefore more appropriate. This told Google that links coming from that entire domain should not be trusted as endorsements of PK SEO.
Over time the file grew as more suspicious domains were confirmed. Each addition was documented so we could maintain one master list rather than creating multiple conflicting versions.
Then Comes the Hard Part: Waiting
Once the disavow file was updated, there was no magic switch. Google still needs to recrawl links and process the information. That can take time. This is another part of SEO that business owners understandably find frustrating.
- You can identify a problem today.
- You can take corrective action today.
- That does not mean rankings return tomorrow.
- The sensible approach is usually to make the correction, continue improving the website and then watch how visibility changes over the following days and weeks.
- Constantly changing pages while waiting for Google to process other signals can make diagnosis even harder.
Algorithm Updates Make Attribution Even More Difficult
The situation becomes more complicated when Google is also changing its ranking systems.
Search results can move because of:
- core ranking changes
- spam systems
- AI-driven search features
- local search changes
- intent adjustments
- competitor improvements
- backlink reassessment
- crawling and indexing changes
That means somebody providing SEO services Sydney businesses rely on cannot simply say:
- “Your rankings dropped. It must have been an algorithm update.”
- That is not analysis.
- Likewise, seeing suspicious backlinks does not automatically mean they caused a ranking decline.
- You need to compare the evidence.
- Which queries changed?
- Which pages changed?
- When were the suspicious links discovered?
- What happened to competitors?
- Did desktop and mobile behave differently?
- Did indexing remain stable?
- Were there technical problems?
- Good SEO is investigative work.
- Sometimes the answer is obvious.
- Sometimes it isn’t.
What Business Owners Can Learn From This
The PK SEO experience reinforced several lessons that apply well beyond the SEO industry.
Monitor your backlink profile
You do not need to check backlinks every morning, but you should have some idea who is linking to your website. Sudden clusters of unfamiliar domains deserve attention.
Do not panic over every bad backlink
- Every website eventually attracts junk links.
- Most will never become a serious problem.
- Look for patterns rather than reacting to one strange domain.
Commercial anchors deserve closer inspection
If websites you have never dealt with suddenly begin using your main money keywords as backlink anchors, investigate why.
Compare several data sources
- No backlink platform sees the entire web.
- Using more than one source can reveal patterns that would otherwise be missed.
Keep records
Dates, domains, anchor text and screenshots make later analysis much easier.
Do not accuse competitors without proof
- Suspicion is not evidence.
- Even when something looks deliberate, identifying the responsible person or business is another matter entirely.
SEO Is Competitive, But It Should Still Be About Building Better Businesses
There is nothing wrong with competition.
PK SEO competes every day with agencies and independent consultants for searches including SEO services Sydney, SEO services, search engine optimisation Sydney, local SEO Sydney and other valuable commercial keywords.
We expect competitors to try to outrank us.
We try to outrank them.
That is how search works.
The frustrating part is dealing with activity that appears designed to create problems rather than compete on merit.
Whether the suspicious links were created by another SEO company, an automated network or somebody else entirely may never be known.
What we do know is that they had to be investigated, documented and dealt with.
And that is something no legitimate business should have to waste its time doing.
For PK SEO, the response has been straightforward.
Clean up what needs cleaning up.
Keep monitoring the backlink profile.
Continue improving the website.
Keep building relevant, legitimate authority.
And concentrate on what really matters: helping Sydney businesses use SEO services to generate more calls, enquiries and customers.
Rankings matter.
But ultimately, they are only valuable when they produce business.
